Discus 2b

Discus 2B
The Discus 2b glider from Schempp-Hirth is a FAI standard class (15m) glider. The successor to the Discus, it has dominated the standard class for over a decade, winning the world championships six times in a row. The design of the glider is based on a high aspect ratio wing with aerodynamic advantages of swept back and `bent-up’ outer wing surfaces. In plan view the almost crescent shape of the leading edge is similar to the original Discus but differs in that it is tapered in three stages. The changes to the wing section as well as the increased outer wing dihederal and winglets provide performance and handling improvements, particularly when thermalling, over the original Discus

The 4 m 1:3.75 super scale model of the 2b reproduces the excellent flying characteristics, performance and beauty of the full size glider. As in the case of the Ventus 2c, the model provides balanced flight behaviour and optimal maneuverability. The wings and control surfaces are reproduced in very accurate hollow moulded construction. The wing control surfaces are split to provide precise control in all phases of flight from launching to landing. The HQ airfoil used on this and most other EMS models, is well proven and gives this model its versatile and smooth flying characteristics. The Maugmer wingtips highlight the aesthetics of this aircraft, creating a distinctive and elegant profile as well as increasing the flight performance.

The cockpit on this scale model is completely finished with scale details such as instrument panel, control column, upholstered seat and seat harnesses. Even the hinge and latching of the canopy are scale; the canopy is hinged at the side and the locking mechanism is a scale reproduction of the original. The canopy detail even includes an opening window mechanism to keep your pilot cool.

Other scale details include the retractable landing wheel, aero-tow hook. the bold body graphics and accurate and elegant tail structure. The fuselage body is moulded in high-gloss GRP.

The model is ideal for aero-towing, but also suitable for slope flying or winch launching. The thermalling performance of the model is exceptional, enhanced turning and circling ability being created by the polyhedral wing design. The wings are strong enough to withstand some aerobatics.

This model is a true joy to fly and provides a spectacular sight for the pilot and spectators.

Self Launch System (Option)

The Discus 2b is available with a scale self launch system which re-designates the model as a Discus 2bM.
