The Duo Discus glider from Schempp-Hirth is one of the most successful
twin seat gliders ever. Based on the Discus, the wing incorporates a multi
stage swept forward design and advanced aerofoil section. The advanced
aerodynamics result in exceptional climb and glide ratios. Although capable
of high performance, the pleasant and docile handling characteristics make
this glider suitable for all. The wing profile and swept forward design give
it a unique and very graceful appearance when in the air.
One of the first, highly successful models created by EMS, the 5.3 m 1:3.75
super scale model of the DuoDiscus reproduces the excellent flying
characteristics, performance and beauty of the full size glider. The Duo
Discus model was developed with good natured flight characteristics which
can be tuned to provide `hot’ handling. This allows the model to be flown by
both developing pilots and pilots who like the very best in scale
performance. The scale detail and overall aesthetics of the model provide
the modeller with the best of both worlds, a truly beautiful model with
excellent performance in the sky.
The wings and control surfaces are reproduced in very accurate hollow
moulded construction. The HQ airfoil used on this and most other EMS models,
is well proven and gives this model its versatile and smooth flying
characteristics. Two versions of the wing are available, with or without the
wingtips.
The cockpit on this scale model is completely finished with scale details
such as instrument panel, control column, upholstered seat and seat
harnesses. Even the hinge and latching of the canopy are scale; the canopy
is hinged at the side and the locking mechanism is a scale reproduction of
the original.
Other scale details include the retractable landing wheel, aero-tow hook.
the bold body graphics and accurate and elegant tail structure. The fuselage
body is moulded in high-gloss GRP.
The model is ideal for aero-towing, but also suitable for slope flying or
winch launching. The thermaling performance of the model is excellent, the
high aspect wings and light weight allow the glider to lift strongly in
thermals. The wings are strong enough to withstand some aerobatics.
The fuselage of this model is compatable with the wings of the Janus 6.25
and the Nimbus 4D 7.03m wings. These alternative wings may be ordered
separately to create a model with different performance characteristics and
looks.
Self Launch System (Option)
The Duo Discus is available with a scale self launch system which
re-designates the model as a Duo Discus M.
