Nimbus 4

Nimbus 4
The Nimbus 4 glider from Schempp-Hirth is an open class competition sailplane. The Nimbus incorporates the latest in aerodynamic design to provide the ultimate in competition performance. Although designed for ultimate aerodynamic performance, the elegance and harmony of the design result in a truly beautiful aircraft. The very high aspect ratio wings have a swept back leading edge with a slight dihederal at the wing-tips. The wing design concept leads to full utilisation of the span and offers excellent low speed handling characteristics.

The 7 m 1:3.75 super scale model of the Nimbus reproduces the fantastic performance and beauty of the full size glider. Spectacular in the sky the Nimbus will astonish and amaze both pilot and spectators alike. The large wingspan and accurate detail result in glider that is docile and elegant in the air. The Nimbus can cover large distances without height loss and will lift gracefully on the lightest thermals.

The wings and control surfaces are reproduced in very accurate hollow moulded construction. The HQ airfoil used on this and most other EMS models, is well proven and gives this model its versatile and smooth flying characteristics.

The cockpit on this scale model is completely finished with scale details such as instrument panel, control column, upholstered seat and seat harnesses. Even the hinge and latching of the canopy are scale; the canopy is hinged at the side and the locking mechanism is a scale reproduction of the original.

Other scale details include the retractable landing wheel, aero-tow hook. the bold body graphics and accurate and elegant tail structure. The fuselage body is moulded in high-gloss GRP.

The model is ideal for aero-towing, but also suitable for slope flying or winch launching.

Self Launch System (Option)

The Nimbus 4 is available with a scale self launch system which re-designates the model as a Nimbus 4 M.

The addition of this option makes the aircraft ideal for the scale-flyer who does not have access to aero-tow facilities. The self-launch system will allow the flyer rolling take-off and multiple climbs when conditions are less than favourable.

If this option is required, the self launch unit comes pre-installed in the fuselage behind the cockpit. The strength of the fuselage is maintained by mounting the self launch unit inside a carbon-fibre housing and by use of additional strengthening within the fuselage. The up-and-go unit is constructed in fibreglass so that it is strong and light. Pre-hinged doors and a special servo to raise and lower the unit are included.
